EcoPouch

Overview

figure 1 Ecopouch overall structure

Capsules no longer contained in a giant bottle, but in a fun tiny pouch! The flexible packaging requires 50% less material than rigid containers of the same volume. Each pouch bag could contain approximately 20 capsules. The packaging material is also made from paper, which is a natural resource can be totally recycled. The small size packaging can also help to prevent product from spoiling. This paper-based design is eco-friendly, 100% recyclable and easy to adjust.

Omega-3 chewies would also aim to the children market, packaged by the manufacturers specifically for children. The package could be developed by adding the carton elements and animal image. This allows fairly ordinary omega-3 oil capsule to become a unique product and attractive to children, further increasing economic benefits.

The unique oil-drop shape is represented our product- Omega-3 oil. Which is small and round with smooth edge, therefore it would not be harmful to children. The design and image for our product would also be New Zealand flavour, like green, clean and reliable. The carton elements would be added to attract kids. The pouch bag structure is flexible, which requires 50% less material than rigid containers of the same volume The design and structure not only represent the characters of our product, but also the image of New Zealand, which could improve the export and increase the economic benefits.

Ecopouch material

figure 4. Ecopouch material structure

The material that form the Ecopouch is paper-based material, which is made from the most common raw material, tree, a nature resource can be regenerated by itself or through plant. The biggest success in this design is we used paper instead of plastic, plastic waste is a critical problem as much as it does not break down. Not all plastics are recycled, some of them could get contaminated with food and cost more

to be recycled. Paper recycling is much easier and more effective, which mean the government will spend less on the recycling if all the packaging is based on paper. The packaging is formed with double-wall paper. The material of outside wall would be paperboard, the thin, lighter weight carton commonly used to carry small weight item. The inner wall is made of wax coated paper, research showed that waxes are most efficient substances to reduce moisture permeability due to their high hydrophobicity (Khwaldia, 2009). Also the thermal conductivity of wax is 0.084 W/(m K), which makes was a great thermal insulator to prevent heat transferring (Thermal Conductivity of some common Materials and Gases, 2016).

The paper-based double wall material would be improved to meet the design requirements. The 100% recyclable material with the advantage of water resistance and thermal insulator would benefit the future product development.
